Feb. 13, 2005
Gonzaga upset No. 12 Arizona State, 2-0 as Patrick Donovan pitched seven scoreless innings. GU posted its first victory over ASU in 11 chances. Pepperdine swept a double-header from Cal Poly, 6-4 and 5-4. The Waves improved to 3-3 this season. Portland defeated Kansas State, 7-3. Santa Clara split its double-header with San Diego State, winning game 2, 8-3. Loyola Marymount lost two at home to California by the scores of 8-5 and 2-1. Saint Mary's fell to UC Davis, 9-5. Gonzaga - 2 SURPRISE, Ariz. - Junior left-handed pitcher Patrick Donovan pitched seven scoreless innings as the Gonzaga University baseball team shutout the 12th ranked Sun Devils of Arizona State University 2-0 in the final game of the Coca-Cola Spring Training Tournament at Surprise Stadium. Gonzaga improved to 3-3 overall with their first victory over the Sun Devils in 11 all-time meetings. Arizona State had its three-game win streak halted to fall to 6-4. Gonzaga scored the only run it would need with an unearned run off Arizona State starting pitcher Zachry Zinicola in the top of the fourth inning. Senior right fielder Jeff Culpepper recorded a two-out single to left field, stole second base and then scored when junior first baseman Bobby Carlson rocketed the ball to center field and ASU freshman J.J. Sferra misplayed the ball. The Zags would add an insurance run in the fifth when junior second baseman Scott Campbell hit a two-out RBI single to center field bringing across Matt Hibbitts, who reached on an error by ASU second baseman Joe Persichina, for another unearned run. "This was a great win for our program," said head coach Mark Machtolf. "I thought Patrick Donovan pitched outstanding today as well as Chris Albrecht. The players came out and played extremely hard today and deserve this win." Culpepper was the offensive leader for the Bulldogs as he went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Donovan limited the normally potent ASU bats to only four hits and struck out three to improve to 1-1 on the season. After stranding the bases loaded in the second inning, Donovan did not allow a runner past first base in the rest of his outing. Sophomore left-hander Albrecht earned the save with two scoreless innings. Zinicola (2-1) made his first start of the year and was saddled with the loss as he gave up three hits and two unearned runs in 4.1 innings of work.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 25 when they host the Utah Valley State College Wolverines in a three-game series at Basin College in Pasco, Wash. Game 1 Game 2 Malibu, Calif. - Senior Steve Kleen's two-out home run in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a day of late-inning heroics as it lifted Pepperdine to a 5-4 victory over Cal Poly and gave the Waves a sweep of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Pepperdine scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 1 to register a 6-4 win. The Waves (3-3) battled back in both games erasing a three-run deficit in the first game and overcoming a 4-2 eight-inning Cal Poly (7-5) lead in Game 2 to win the series. The Mustangs won Saturday's opener 2-1. Kleen played a major role in both contests as he hit a sixth-inning game-tying home run in Game 1 and pitched three innings of relief to earn the victory. He went 4-for-8 with two runs scored, two RBI and pair of home runs in the doubleheader and finished the series 5-for-12 with three runs scored and three RBI. In Game 1, Cal Poly took a 3-0 lead against Pepperdine junior left-hander Paul Coleman who was making his first collegiate start. The Mustangs scored a run in the first and added two more in the third before the Waves scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie the score 3-3. Cal Poly first baseman Bret Berglund doubled with two outs in the seventh inning off Kleen, who had relieved Coleman with a runner aboard, to put the Mustangs on top 4-3. Pepperdine, which is showing an early-season knack for late-inning heroics, scored three times in the eighth off Cal Poly closer Mike Bille. With one out, sophomore catcher Chad Tracy and Kleen singled ahead of a double to right field by sophomore left fielder Luke Salas that knotted the game 4-4. After freshman Danny Worth was intentionally walked to load the bases, pinch-hitter Taylor Klosowski walked on a 3-2 pitch to force home the go-ahead run. The Waves added an insurance run when junior second baseman Nick Kliebert worked a two-out walk to force home another run. In the nightcap, freshman Barry Enright started for Pepperdine and pitched five no-hit innings before allowing a sixth-inning leadoff home run to Drew Gillmore that cut the Waves' lead to 2-1. Cal Poly took a 3-2 lead in the seventh against Enright and scored an unearned run against freshman left-hander Drew Saberhagen in the eighth to take a 4-2 lead. The Waves battled back to tie the game in the eighth, scoring two unearned runs on a double to right-center field by Kliebert. Rookie right hander Adam Olbrychowski (1-0), who made his collegiate debut in relief of Saberhagen in the eighth, pitched a scoreless ninth inning setting the stage for Kleen's heroics. Pepperdine travels to Texas next week to open a three-game series at Houston beginning Friday at 5 p.m. (PST). Junior Matthew Peters belted Portland's first homer of the season, a two-run shot in the third inning on Sunday. Peters was UP's No. 1 starter a year ago, but has earned a spot in the lineup this season. Portland - 7 SURPRISE, Ariz.- Portland and Kansas State were determined to make the journey to Phoenix worthwhile. Despite the final three days of the Oakland A's Spring Training Tournament being cancelled because of inclement weather, the teams traveled across Phoenix to the Kansas City Royals' spring training facility on Sunday and Portland earned its first win of the season by a 7-3 margin. To compensate for missing a pair of games, Portland and Oregon State - another of the teams in the Oakland Athletics Tournament - have added a game to their schedules and will play each other Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at OSU's Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. On Sunday, the Pilots (1-1) benefited from a strong pitching performance by freshman southpaw Ari Ronick, who tossed five innings and gave up just two runs. Junior Matthew Peters belted Portland's first home run of the year, a two-run shot in the third and junior rightfielder Travis Vetters tallied three hits in the win. The Wildcats (0-2) took the early lead, as senior Terry Blunt hit a triple and was later plated for a 1-0 lead in the first inning. It was short-lived as the Pilots tallied three in the second and two in the third off K-State junior starter Brett Mugge. Junior Nik Kosach drove in two runs in the second with a single and Vetters followed with an RBI-single of his own. Peters went deep in the third for a 5-1 UP lead. Mugge was chased after four innings of work, striking our four, walking one and allowing seven hits and six runs, all earned. K-State junior outfielder Joe Roundy took Ronick deep in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-2, but Portland sophomores Sean Sargent and Josh Roberts came out of the bullpen and held the Wildcats to just one run in the final four innings. Game 1 Game 2 Los Angeles, Calif. - When LMU baseball had tallied seven runs by the second inning, it looked like the Lions would have all the cushion they needed, as they held a 7-4 lead through the fourth inning Sunday afternoon against California (3-4) at Page Stadium. But the Bears put together a six-run fifth inning that featured five runs on all extra-base hits including back-to-back home runs to steal the 11-9 game three and 2-1 series win from LMU (1-2). LMU and Cal logged nearly 10 hours of baseball in the two-day, three-game series before the third game was called Sunday afternoon after eight innings of play. After the 9-8 comeback for Saturday's Opening Day, the Lions dropped two on Sunday, beginning with the morning's 8-5 contest. The Lion offense started strong in game three, tallying four runs in the first inning after a triple by junior James Cooper plated Matt White, who had led-off the game with his first double. Kyle Mura and Joe Frazee followed with singles, setting up Jon Oller's two-RBI double. It was much of the same in the second when White's lead-off double again set the stage for a RBI double, this time off the bat of Frazee. A.J. LaMonda capped off the three-run second inning with a two-RBI double that scored Chris Pettit and Frazee for the 7-2 advantage. But Cal added nine runs over the next three innings, thanks in part to three home runs from Josh Satin, Chris Errecart, and Jason Corder. The Lions also added two in the sixth when back-to-back doubles by Frazee and LaMonda were followed by a sacrifice fly by freshman Sean Dovel. The two doubles made it a combined ten straight extra base hits for the programs, as LMU and Cal hit six doubles, three home runs, and one triple during the fifth and sixth innings. Cal reliever Travis Talbott would not let the Lions get any close though, holding LMU hitless in the final two innings for his first save of the season. Kyle Huddy got the start for the Lions in the final game of the series, seeing his first action since March of 2004, when he was sidelined with an injury. The junior right-hander went four innings, allowing seven hits and striking out five. "It was really good to see Kyle Huddy back on the mound today," LMU Head Coach Frank Cruz said. "I thought he threw some good pitches. It was just nice to get him back." Junior Erik Reyes (0-1) took the loss for the Lions in game three, while Joe Todoroff (1-0) received his first win of 2005. A three-run home run in the top of the ninth gave Cal the 8-5 win in the early game of the doubleheader Sunday at LMU. The two teams had been locked at 5-5 since the seventh inning, until Errecart's first shot of the day tied the weekend series at one game each. The Lions made a two-out push in the bottom of the ninth when White put up a single to right. Pettit followed with a bunt single that advanced White to second, but Cal preserved its win forcing a groundout for out three. With the game tied at 3-3 in the fifth, a double just inside the right field line off the bat of LaMonda had the potential to be the game-winner. LaMonda's shot scored Cooper and Frazee, who had just singled to right, to give the Lions the mid-game 5-3 lead. But Cal chipped away at the two run lead, responding with one run in the six and one in the seventh, when Satin hit his home run of the day off LMU reliever Gabe Bueno to set up the tie game situation heading into the ninth. Michael Cooper (1-0) took the win for the Bears, after holding the Lions to one hit over two innings. Alex Trafton picked up his first save of the season. Sunday morning starter Jeff Stevens went six innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs, while striking out four. Freshman Brad Meyers received the loss for LMU after giving up the home run in the top of the ninth. Five LMU starters hit over .350 on the day, but it was White who turned heads for the Lions in Sunday's two games, going 6-for-7 (.857) with three doubles. The senior posted a great comeback weekend, as it was his first action since February of 2004, when he was sidelined with an injury. "Matt White really hit the ball well for us today," Cruz said. Frazee added a 5-for-8 effort on the day, with four runs scored and two RBI. Continuing their February homestand, the Lions will host defending national champion Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The Lions have won two straight match-ups with the Titans in Page Stadium, including last year's 3-2 win. Fans can follow all of the action on the Lions Audio Network at www.LMULions.com. UC Davis - 9 Davis, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team lost their final game of the River City Classic on Saturday afternoon to the UC Davis Aggies 9-5 in Davis, CA. The Gaels finished the two-day tournament with a 1-2 record. The Gaels lost to Pacific in the first game of the tourney, and beat Sacramento State in the second game on Friday. On Saturday, the Gaels fell behind the Aggies 3-0 after one inning and trailed 5-0 after four innings before mounting a comeback. Saint Mary's cut the lead to 6-4 after seven innings, but the UC Davis scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory. Saint Mary's was led by Sam Carter, who went 3-for-5 with two RBI, Cody Nelson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Preston Young went 2-for-5, including a solo home run and Kevin Mangels added a solo home run. The Gaels' Chris Mezzavilla started the game and picked up the loss, pitching 3 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs. Dan Lewis pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief and allowed three earned runs. With the loss the Gaels fall to 1-5 on the season. Saint Mary's will play its first home game of the year on Tuesday, February 15 when it hosts Nevada at 2 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field. Game 1 Game 2 SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After wet conditions kept the Santa Clara baseball team off the field on Friday and Saturday, the Broncos returned on Sunday to split a doubleheader at San Diego State on Sunday. SCU dropped an 8-4 contest to start the day before posting an 8-3 victory in the second game. Heading into the week, the Broncos are 5-3 on the season. The Aztecs used a three-run second inning to build an early lead in the morning game. Capped by a two-run home run from Tim O'Brien, San Diego State took an early 3-0 lead over the Broncos in the second frame. In the top of the fourth inning, SCU would get on the scoreboard and reduce the Aztec lead to two runs. A one-out triple from Robert Perry would put a runner in scoring position before the center fielder scored on a SCU groundout. San Diego State returned in the bottom of the inning and posted four runs on the board to take a 7-1 lead. A two-RBI double off the bat of Quintin Berry highlighted the inning. The Broncos added three runs in the top of the fifth, but were unable to score again. A lead-off home run from Michael Thompson started the inning as the third baseman hit his first round tripper of the year. An one-out double by Kevin Drever continued the Bronco rally and after an out, the shortstop would score on a Ryan Chiarelli double to left center. Nic Crosta would drive Chiarelli in with a bases loaded walk before the inning ended. Senior Kellan McConnell took the loss in his first decision of the season. Freshman reliever Donald Brandt was spectacular in the late innings, recording a season-high eight strikeouts in the last three innings. The Santa Clara native did not allow a run in three frames. Eight would once again prove to be the magic number in the second game of the day as the Broncos registered an 8-3 victory over the Aztecs to close out the day. In the third inning, Chiarelli would reach base on a walk, steal second and move to third on an error to give SCU a scoring opportunity. A ground out from Perry later scored Chairelli and gave SCU an early lead. The Broncos claimed a 4-0 advantage in the fourth frame after adding three runs to their total. Dustin Realini reached on a double to right field before Thomspon's second home run of the day brought in two more runs. Drever would then bring in Jason Matteucci later in the frame with an RBI-single. Heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Broncos led 4-0. SCU allowed one run in the bottom of the fourth before adding another in the bottom of the frame. The Broncos would also scored a run in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings as they pulled away to the victory. A solo home run from Perry in the ninth highlighted the late inning scores. The Aztecs posted two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but it would not be enough as Anthony Rea closed out the game for SCU. Matteucci went 3-for-4 in the second game with three runs, while Thompson drove in a game-high two runs. Mike Stutes posted his second win of the season with his first relief appearance of the year. He recorded four strikeouts in three inning in relief of starter Patrick Overholt. Overholt struck out four in three shutout innings to begin the contest. Santa Clara returns home on Tuesday to host Sacramento State in a 3 p.m. contest at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Broncos will also host Washington over the weekend in a three-game series. On Friday night, the teams will face-off in a 6 p.m. game. |
