WCC Tournament Greats: Day 7
Feb. 28, 2006 SAN BRUNO, Calif. - With the West Coast Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament tipping off this Thursday, the WCC takes a look back at some of the event's all-time great performers. Each day, leading up to the day before the championships begin (March 1), the WCC will recognize one male and one female former student-athlete for their achievements during the WCC Tournament. This year's event marks the 20th anniversary of the men's tournament and the 15th anniversary of the women's tournament. With just two days remaining until the tip-off of the event, the WCC looks back at former WCC Tournament greats Hakeem Ward of San Francisco and Adrianne Slaughter of Loyola Marymount. WCC Tournament All-Time Great Performers: Day 7 SAN FRANCISCO - Hakeem Ward (1997-1998) As the No. 5 seed in 1998, San Francisco beat host Santa Clara, 85-83, in the closing seconds in the semifinals before downing regular season champion Gonzaga, 80-67, to claim the tournament crown. By virtue of winning the conference tournament, the Dons were awarded the league's automatic bid and earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1982. Ward is the only two-time WCC all-tournament team member in program history and is the only Don to take home tournament MVP honors. LOYOLA MARYMOUNT - Adrianne Slaughter (2001-2004) The center led Loyola Marymount to a 59-54 overtime victory over Portland in the semifinals with 18 points and nine rebounds, and dropped in 14 points with eight boards as the Lions edged Gonzaga in the championship game, 61-58. Slaughter also helped lead Loyola Marymount to a championship game appearance as a freshman in 2001, and finished her four-year career with 100 points in WCC tournament games to rank 13th on the all-time chart.
